MoteinoMEGA battery and case options?
« on: January 04, 2018, 07:00:22 PM »
Hi,

I used MoteinoMEGA in my project.
One of the applications is to use it as a sender that will deep sleep every once a while.
The device doesn't have to tolerate extreme temperature.

The application goals for me is to make the device:
1. sleek and small
2. enough battery power to last longer. And smaller battery is preferred.

I did a quick search and didn't find what I need regarding MoteinoMEGA case.
And for battery, I am not sure I cover all discussions, but it seems people recommend either cellphone battery and AA-like battery.

If someone had tried button cell and some 3D printed case for MEGA, could you share the information??

Thank you

Search for coincell battery applications.  There are plenty of postings with advice on using these.

Out of curiosity, why are you using a MoteinoMega instead of a Moteino?

Hi Tom

Thanks for quick reply. Trying the new keyword "coin cell" leads to more results.

My selection process may not make much sense as I am not sure I do choose the best board due my limited knowledge .

I don't recall exactly how the decision was made but I was basically looking for
1. minimal to no soldering.
2. no external antenna
3. price

MoteinoMEGA with trace antenna was then picked.

Ok, just wondering.  The Moteino with trace antenna would have been lower price, but the Mega gives you far more flexibility with more memory and I/O pins.

In either case, the Moteino platform is a good place to start.  Lots of support and it will meet most low power needs.  Note, however, that you'll need to do some modifications if you want to run from a coin cell.  2xAAA batteries will be the best volumetric solution if you stick with stock Moteino boards (unless you're willing to use rechargeable batteries - then LiPo is by far the best volumetric solution)  If the node is outdoors and has some daylight sun, you can get away with no battery (see Lowpower blog on SuperCap & Solar cell).

The nice thing about joining this community is that there are plenty of opportunities for exploration.

Guessing he saw the Moteino Mega w/ Trace Antenna on the first page of the store:
https://lowpowerlab.com/shop/

The regular moteino w/ trace antenna is strangely absent from that page, but once you start clicking around, it'll show up in the list of all moteinos: https://lowpowerlab.com/shop/product/145
