issue assembling and powering

Hello,

I assembled the MightyHat but I did not solder the LCD screen and the buzzer (I did not receive one in my kit, instead I received a capacitor, I dont understand why that is). I attached a battery and connected it to a Raspberry Pie 2. What I am seeing is this. The Pie 2 does not get powered when I attached a (good quality) PSU to the MightyHat. The shutoff led keeps blinking red and that is all. Any ideas what I am doing wrong ?

Felix

Is this an R3? Powering without a battery should work.
Is the battery polarity matching that of the battery connector? If not it's probably already too late.

PS. You did not receive the LCD and buzzer, but did you order those options?

sgoudelis

Yes it is an R3. The battery polarity matches. There is no problem there. I did receive the LCD but not the buzzer. I did receive however a capacitor. Is that needed somewhere I could not find it in the images where it should be soldered.

Felix has just recently updated the assembly guide regarding the cap;
https://lowpowerlab.com/guide/mightyhat/?view=all

sgoudelis

The docs state that the capacitor is 100uF while the one I got was a 1000uF. But I think there is no harm in that. Soldering the cap had no effect. The board still has the Shutoff led blinking.

So my guess is that, you probably tested this before sending it. The package was in a good state when I got it. So I probably messed it up somewhere without noticing. Do I have any options at this point ? Repair, buy a new one?

Possibly a typo in the guide, someone else mentioned the same 1000uf cap here;
https://lowpowerlab.com/forum/mightyhat/mightyhat-and-pi3-powerup-issue-(solved)/msg20205/#msg20205

Felix

Sorry for the typo, it's 1000uF (1mF).

sgoudelis, yes I test all these boards because I want to ensure people get a working board.
You're welcome to send it back for analysis if you'd like and feel that's the best option, you'd have to cover the shipping cost. I would look at it and determine if there's a problem and fix or exchange it if it's something from my end. Otherwise we can continue to look at what could have been done wrong during assembly. I think in most cases that's where things go wrong or assumptions are made which make it behave strangely.

Hi,
I've same problem, shutdown led is blinking and pi(model B+) doesn't power on when I connect power only to mighty hat usb. I don't have any battery connected.
PI should get power from mighty hat, right?
I've soldered cap, display, buzzer, double check everything. Please help.
Another thing - Charging LED is blinking of I move mightyhat usb power connector, bag contact our something?

EDIT#1:
If I remove mightyhat and load sample sketch, using FTDI, works fine.
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/LowPowerLab/RFM69/master/Examples/MightyHat/MightyHat.ino
(LCD works, buzzer works)

For gateway installation I used:
cd /home/pi
sudo wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/LowPowerLab/RaspberryPi-Gateway/master/.setup/gatewaysetup.sh
sudo bash gatewaysetup.sh && sudo rm gatewaysetup.sh

EDIT#2:
after uploading that demo sketch, pi started to work.
@Felix: which sketch do we need for gateway? Shouldn't be sketc automatically uploaded with gateway setup script (gatewaysetup.sh) ?

EDIT#3:
Everything works fine with demo sketch.

It's going to blink because you have a variable load down the power path where the battery is, but no battery is connected. That's "normal", but to eliminate this you should add the battery.
