Any Suggestions for IR Temperature Sensors?
« on: January 05, 2014, 11:51:17 AM »
I have a project I'm thinking about to help at the shop I work.  I need to be able to get a couple temperatures readings.  I want to make a big display to hang from the hood while a car is running in the shop that would display coolant temperature, or cylinder head temperature.  I am looking for a some kind of IR temperature sensors to use.  Something that I could possibly point at, or rest on the upper radiator hose.  I was thinking of some kind of clamp that would slip around the upper hose.

I'm looking for something realistically priced that would be easy to read with the Moteino.  Open to any suggestions.  I've never used any of this before.

So far I've been looking at this one.

And this one....has anyone used this.  It looks like what I'm looking for

What temperature ranges are you talking about here?

Is contact off the table? As old school as they seem, thermocouples are still very good at what they do.

I've used the melexis MLX90614 (some) and MLX90615 (a lot) and they just work. They are *instant* temperature sensors and offer 2 modes of operation (ambient and targeted). I would go with the 90615 if I were you, you can find them on digi for around ~$11.50: http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/MLX90615SSG-DAA-000-TU/MLX90615SSG-DAA-000-TU-ND/2440563
They will interface directly to Moteino (i2c).
Let me know if you need help with the code.

I was just looking at Thermocouples...but after your insight Felix.  I'm off to order a couple 90615s from Digikey.  Thanks,  Marcello

MLX90615s showed up.  I was shocked at how small these things are.  Any suggestions for mounting and wiring these things?  I would love to see what other people have done.  I was thinking of mounting it through a PCB and using the PCB for mounting.  There wouldn't be any ready made PCBs for this?

Thanks,

Mab

They are I2C so just use some 4.7 or 10K on the SDA/SCL, power from 3.3V.

Sorry The wiring is no problem.......Its the mounting. Is there a nice way to mount these things?  Everything is so small.  I was hoping there was a fixture or something I could buy to make a nice job of this.

Not that I know of .. if you want this on a PCB then you might just want to create a footprint for it. Otherwise it will mount in perfboard just fine.
