Is there a preferred way to upgrade the gateway software? I have been running v6 for a while now and just saw where v7 is ready. Is there a preferred way to upgrade?
I know I could just download the new version and replace what I have, but I'm always afraid of potential database issues and the possibility of losing my configs and logs.
How are you old-timers with the gateway software handling this?

I think he means you, Felix :D
Happy Holidays, All.
Tom
No offense intended.....old-timer in experience, not years.
Happy Holidays to all!
There isn't a whole lot to it. The new image is always upgraded to the latest kernel and packages along with any gateway specific changes. So .. if at all possible it's the best thing to upgrade to it. You can just save your db directory and also do a full backup of your SD, then upgrade the image, overwrite the db directory with your old one (enable the shutdowncheck script in /etc/rc.local if you got a MightyHat or ATXRaspi, setup your wifi etc). I think that's about it.
You could of course achieve the changes manually by running a series of commands but then we get into the gritty details of what/why something failed and how to fix it. The most important fix was the nedb upgrade to 1.5. If you don't really care much about anything else, you can go in the node_modules directory and run npm update to get that up to date.
Thanks Felix.
Do you foresee additional changes to the directory structures going forward? If they don't change it's probably pretty trivial to write some simple shell scripts to move things into their new homes. But when directories change names it would make each upgrade unique and not worth the time to write any scripts.
Just curious.

It's likely but not very. With this move I intended to keep everything as grouped as possible.

Thanks Felix. I'm sure it's a delicate balancing act, trying to decide between useful upgrades/features and not changing things too much between individual releases.
