Can Moteinos be used without the gateway web interface?

Hello,

I am fairly new to the Raspberry Pi and to home automation projects. I have a simple project that I am trying to accomplish and I'm certain that moteinos will be a good solution.

I have a Hue Light in a closet that I would like to turn on when a motion detector detects motion. Can I set a Moteino PIR sensor to send the motion signal to a Raspberry Pi and have a simple program on the Pi use that signal to trigger the Hue API to control the light?

At this moment I am not looking for the full web interface controls like the gateway examples. How would I set the Pi to receive the signal from the motion sensor? I assume I need the sensor and another Moteino on the Pi itself but I don't know how to set up the Moteino on the Pi to read in the sensor messages without having to set up the entire gateway web interface stuff.

Thanks!

Felix

You can write a program that reads the serial messages from the Moteino, and parses them into meaningful tokens that you can then use to make decisions.
The gateway stack is basically just that + a web interface.
You can do that in whatever language you want.

@vdesouza,

What kind of software/hardware interface does the Hue use?  It's trivial to have a Moteino sense motion with a PIR and output a signal.  You said you wanted the Pi to run a program.....what kind of program?  In what language?  What's the physical interface between the Hue and the Pi?

Sounds like a cool project.

I just received the Moteinos for motion and gateway and in the process of getting started.

The Hue lights can be controlled through a simple python script on the Pi. I'm sure there are other ways to interact with the Hue lights and in other languages but I am familiar in using Python to trigger the lights to turn on or off and in different colors and brightness.

The idea is to have the Pi receive a motion detected message (from the MotionMote) and trigger the hue lights to turn on. I haven't had the chance to look into how to have the Python script receive the motion message from the gateway Moteino yet. Any suggestions/tips? If it helps, I am using a Moteino-USB for the gateway and that will be connected to the Pi.

Thanks!
