Title: Failure to initialize
Post by: hatchett on January 19, 2016, 12:42:58 PM
I have to admit that i am not real experienced with the Arduino so be kind. In any event i recently purchased two Moteino Mega devices with USB, extra memory loaded and the LoRa radio board(915MHz) attached. I have added the Radiohead library and have the Moteino Mega board to the platform list. I have have compiled and downloaded the server and client from the Radiohead RF95 sketch and have not gotten an error message but i get a INIT failed on the comport message. I do see that the sketch calls out a frequency of 434MHz but i would think the radio should still function, though poorly.  Any help here would be appreciated.

Did you load the library I linked on this Moteino-LoRa page (https://lowpowerlab.com/moteino/#lora)?
This is a mod of the original RadioHead and contains the changes needed to make them work on Moteinos.
You will need to set the frequency to the correct band if you expect any reasonable performance.

Thanks, i am assuming i go into the RF driver file to adjust the frequency? Im an RF guy not so much a firmware guy, obviously.

No, you need to install the library I provided at the link above. Download and install that in your Arduino IDE, depending on what version you use there are different ways to install the lib.
After that there are some examples called RF95_client and RF95_server which were actually used to test your Moteinos. In the sketch you can choose the frequency (default is 915).

Got it! seems to be working, looking on the analyzer right now. Should be interesting doing some field testing compared to some of our current FSK radios. Thanks again.

Great, yes please report your findings :)
We need more RF "feedback"!

I am back to working on this radio and have done some field testing, the results are so, so. I have been trying to adjust the  modem for the "low slow" setting, Bw31_25Cr48Sf512 but i must be missing something in how to do this in my sketch. Any guidance for this Arduino beginner would be greatly appreciated.

The best I can do is point to the original library creator's documentation (http://www.airspayce.com/mikem/arduino/RadioHead/classRH__RF95.html).
If others can share anything please do.
