In some house wirings you won't be able to find neutral wire inside switch box.
isn't it possible to design a PSU that can generate small amount of power (<300mah) from only live wire?
There are currently couple of wireless switches in the market that can work with only live wire! They have been certified in different countries and somehow pretty popular in smart home world.
You're asking if it's possible?
Yes it is.
Yes I was asking if it is possible and if it is easy enough?
Also why didn't you do this on your SwitchMote PSU? could you please tell me some pros and cons about that?
Thanks in advance.
All such commercial switches I've seen had non isolated power supplies. A lot of people asked for a isolated supply. In the US in most cases you have a neutral wire. SwitchMote is designed for US sized electrical boxes.
Thanks for the replies.
I am interested to make one of those power supplies. Would you be able to guide me to the right direction about how to make those? do you know an article or a website that can help me with that?
Unfortunately I don't have any resources. Maybe buy one and take it apart and see how it's done?
I've actually done that, you will discover they are not isolated.
I am going to develop commercialised equipment that will be installed and handled by certified electricians. so non-isolated doesn't really matter I suppose.
Certified electricians !== electronic engineers
yes I know. but my project will be a commercialised product that electricians can buy, hook up the wires and it will be ready to go. no assembling, soldering etc will be required.
The final product will be assembled in factory with covers and housing etc... and only two terminals will be visible that electrician need to hook up wires into.
in that case do I still need to be worried about isolating the psu? if that is still have to be isolated, then why there are certified products made by factories out there without isolated psu?
Sounds like you will make the perfect smart switch everyone is looking for.
If you can make it for less than $30 a piece you will beat most competition, so get ready to be a millionaire ;)
Looking forward to see your final product.
