I received a pair of 433Mhz RFM69HW moteinos. Upon connecting the Node moteino (without green tape on chip) to my computer's USB port I get the following message:
Transmitting at 433 Mhz...
SPI Flash Init FAIL! (is chip present?)
Sending[0]: nothing...
Sending[1]: 1 nothing...
Sending[2]: 12 nothing...
The Gateway moteino (with green tape on chip) gives me a similar message:
Listening at 915 Mhz...
SPI Flash Init FAIL! (is chip present?)
Does the "SPI Flash Init FAIL" message sound like a hardware or a firmware problem?
Apparently the Gateway moteino is loaded with the 915Mhz firmware. Is there any hardware differences between the 433Mhz and 915Mhz versions, or can I simply upload the 433Mhz Gateway firmware?
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Reload the Gateway Moteino with the 433 MHz. version. Both the gateway and node Moteino must be the same frequency or they will never communicate.

The init fail just means the code that is read from the chip does not match the code the init function was passed (0xEF30?)
Does your Moteino have a FLASH chip?
Are you initializing the flash chip like this: flash.init(0xEF30) ?
If you don't have the chip, the message is normal.
Thanks for the info. I don't have flash. Everything works OK after I uploaded the "gateway" script after setting it to 433mhz.
As a ham radio operator, I'm interested in testing the range after attaching a couple of hi-gain directional antennas.
