Title: putting meaning to RSSI values?
Post by: sketchy on January 25, 2014, 01:50:35 PM
Maybe I am looking at this wrong?  With 802.11, things like my iPhone show bars for signal strength (as does 4G)...what would be the equivalent for RFM69 RSSI values?  I get at best -24 when I have two Moteino's next to each other and about -45 when one is in the back of my kitchen and the other is a few rooms away...

So would something like 0 to -30 be "4 bars" 31-50 "3 bars" ???? I'm trying to get a feel for how to think about the RSSI value.

thanks for any advice.

Signal strength is logarithmic not linear so you'd have to divide the range a bit different. The lines shown on your phone simply mean nothing other than, there's no/some/enough/plenty of signal.
The radios will work fine below -100dBm. You will notice the farther you walk the slower the RSSI will drop. With obstacles its harder because a reinforced concrete wall placed in the same place as a drywall wall will influence RF very differently (all other variables being the same).
So it's really up to you to judge how to do it, I think it depends on your own environment.

Hey Felix,
Thanks very much for the reply.  Ach! Logarithmic.  That makes sense.  I guess I'm being too subjective.
