Packet loss

I have a pair of Moteinos up and running, the RSSI is -30dBm.
The sensor Moteino sends its data every 60 seconds (ish). The gateway Moteino reports the period between beacons from the sensor, mots of the time this is 60 seconds (ish) as expected. However there are random times when it is 120 seconds (ish), which means a beacon was missed entirely. The sensor uses: sendWithRetry with a 50ms timeout and 20 retries. I know the Gateway sends it ACK back with a 12ms lag, so the 50ms should be plenty long enough; packet length is 37.

I am having to send the beacon more frequently than I need to allow for the odd one going missing, this of course uses more battery. Any ideas how to make the send more reliable?

How does over the air updates cope with packet loss?

Try putting your radios into SLEEP mode rather than STANDBY when the radio is not doing anything. There appears to be a problem when going back into RX mode from STANDBY that prevents the receiver from receiving the next packet, but will receive subsequent packets. That may fix your problem.
