I'm ready to connect an Arduino into a USB port on my Raspberry Pi and
learn to send commands and receive data from the RPi. Once I've got this
going I'll place my order for a Moteino-USB and some Moteinos.
It looks like this sketch demonstrates what I want to do.

Can you recommend other examples to help me get started?
All examples should work and give you some insight how to use the RFM69 radios. There are several examples, and users also posted their own code in this forum occasionally.
But just get started with Gateway and Node. Match the settings to your chosen radios and that's pretty much it. Then start changing to send your own data. Mind that you have to check receiveDone as often as you can to receive data (ie be in RX mode), otherwise your radio will be "deaf".

Very good, I'll study and adapt these sketches.
