Title: Moteino USB - Cannot power from battery [SOLVED - broken battery wire]
Post by: codeforge on November 13, 2014, 09:45:04 AM
Hi,
i have 2 moteino USB and they work very well. To power my moteino i must attach to computer USB and only to the computer. If I connect the usb cable to a battery for phone like ravpower battery pack the moteino won't power on. I try to connect a 3,7v lipo (1s) to GND and VIN but nothing, moteino still remain off. I try 2S lipo (7,4v) to GND and VIN but always off. The i buy a 3.3v regulator and power the regulator with a 2s lipo and connect the regulator output (3.3v) to GND and 3.3v but always off. Then i connect the usb cable to pc and it found. But only from computer usb power can turn moteino on. How can i do to turn it on with an external battery?

thanks

Ok so if I understand this right, you are trying to power the MoteinoUSB exactly like it is shown in the following photo and it's not working?

MoteinoUSB powered by Lipo battery (https://flic.kr/p/q3GfHL)

How do you know it doesn't power up? Did you load some sketch that does something, blink a LED?
Is the battery at least 3.6V?

yes, the sketch is a simple blink on board led d9 and another led on pin 11. The battery is charged and if i connect it to pc i can see the leds blink if i connect the battery nothing appen

And neither of the 2 MoteinoUSBs work by powering to GND+VIN from a 3.5V+ source (nothing else wired to it)?
Can you post a picture clearly showing your wiring?
Can you measure the "3.3v" pin when you connect it to your PC? What is the voltage on that?

i'll post an image soon, now i'm going to work, but yes from 3.3v pin i read 3.28v and from VIN i read 5v or 4.98v only if the board is connected to pc. I see that when i connect the moteino usb to computer the green usb cable (the micro cable within the usb cable) give 3.3v while if i connect to usb power pack only the black and red cable are connected to draw 5v. The green and white are 0.0v. Seems that moteino will power on only if feel power on the green cable.. is it possible?
Or the simplest answer could be i burned out both moteino... So if is there a solution well, anyway i will buy 2 new moteino...
thanks again for the answer and the time (sorry for my bad english)

If you're getting 3.3V on "3.3v" pin then I don't think anything is burned out. Unless if there is some short somewhere.
The only difference when you power it from USB is that it goes through a shottky diode before it gets to the regulator. When you power from VIN the shottky prevents it to power the FTDI chip, that's it. The VIN trace into the regulator is very short and you should definitely read the voltage you are supplying to VIN, because essentially there is nothing else in between. Please post a close up of the board, I'd like to check for any stray shorts.

SOLVED!!!!! :)))))) the battery was broken...  The little wire is broken and if i touch or move the cable sometimes the moteino turn on and sometimes off... SORRY!! lame problem.... :P :P ::) ::)
