Title: Moteino + any protocol to RFXCom
Post by: darrepac on January 29, 2014, 01:56:00 PM
Hi

I am looking for a low power wireless platform (Moteino fits well) that can send wireless data (integer value to give the level of my water tank) to a RFXTRX from RFXCom (http://www.rfxcom.com/store/Transceivers/12103). I don't want to create a receiver and want to use the RFXTRX for that knowing that it is already compatible with many protocol (Oregon, X10, LightwaveRF, Lacrosse etc). So I want to know if any of you has already developped a library for Modeino for one of this protocol (X10, Oregon etc)

thanks

Yikes, $160 for that one controller ... maybe it's really worth it but you can get 8 Moteinos for that price :)
My 2 cents on X10 - although I've never used X10 everyone I talked to said it's really unreliable and given its age it should not even be used in new projects.
Now at first glance... it looks like the RFXTRX receiver works on the standard 433.92Mhz frequency. The current RFM69 lib is configured for 434Mhz but can be changed to match 433.92. As far as protocol goes, obviously you'd have to program for that. I doubt anyone has put any work into making RFM12B/RFM69 compatible with this specific product but I could be wrong. You may be able to bridge a working open source solution in between a Moteino network and your RFXTRX receiver.

But wondering ... is this unit a receiver ONLY? Can it talk back to your devices or send ACKs?
My gut tells me it's probably very limited and can do a lot in the sense of listening but not so much in the sense of talking to your nodes which would make it really hard to use in a critical application like home security where you have to know when a breach happens ... again, could be wrong.

I am not asking something specific to this device but a standard protocol like X10, Oregon etc... as this device is compatible with such standardized products

This device can receive and send to many different products using many protocol. This device is quite heavily used for doing some home automation stuff. Introduction info here: http://code.mios.com/trac/mios_rfxtrx

I second this question.  I have an RFXCOM device used by Homeseer that already listens to a bunch of 433mhz sensors around my house.  These sensors use a protocol.

If the Moteino could mimic any of the supported protocols that the RFXCOM can listen to it would solve my problem and be very easy to add a bunch of these devices to my system.

If we can't mimic a supported protocol, I would have to write a homeseer plugin, and have yet another transceiver hooked into the server.  Being that I virtualized my home automation environment, its harder to hook up more transceivers unless they support ethernet.

I guess you are welcome to write a library that will support that protocol.

I learnt a bit more about all of this.
First of all, all supported protocol by RFXCOM are OOK based (it doesn't support FSK).
While they are some tricks to make OOK work with RFM12B (included in Jeelib), it makes much more sense with RFM19W as OOK is supported by RFM69W. Unfortunately no library exist yet for OOK with RFM69W (that's why I requested it here: http://lowpowerlab.com/forum/index.php/topic,332.0.html)
Besides RFXCOM, supporting OOK mode would open tons of gadgets that use such modulation...

If someone will come up with good OOK support I might include it in the library.
I don't have OOK hardware to test with so not sure how to implement that.
