Felix, I've built the ver3 mailbox notifier but having a little trouble with Newhaven LCD display. I can't find a schematic for the receiver setup on the site..Could you post a link. I've looked at the photo but it's not clear to me what is going on. I have the LCD datasheet and hooked it up according to that but my hookup didn't look like your photo. Plugging in rst on display to rst on board disabled the board. Something I'm just not seeing on the datasheet probably. I'm not quite a noob but far from expert. I did get the sketches uploaded but no LCD.

I think I remember having some issues as well. I think the DS might be a little vague as far as the orientation, make sure you are looking at it the right way, TOP/BOTTOM wise.
I have it wired to my Moteino gateway. The passives are directly soldered to the LCD pins. There are 2x 0.1uF and i think 3x10K, pullups for the I2c and rst. See the photos in this post:

I marked the pinout on the LCD with black marker and it's pretty plain where they go, although I had some tape over it, but it should give you an idea how it's wired. The other 3 resistors on the side are for the backlight LEDs.
The switch disables the backlight.
