Title: FTDI R3 adapter not detected [SOLVED: bad USB cable!]
Post by: corywinter on August 28, 2018, 08:54:59 AM
Hi,

I purchased a FTDI R3 a few months ago. I've used earlier revisions without issue and am also using Moteino USBs without issue. This is the first FTDI R3 I've tried and the device doesn't appear to be detected when I plug it into a USB port on my macbook. I've tried a couple of different cables with no luck. I've tried installing new FTDI drivers AND also without the drivers.

The device itself looks nice enough. (https://photos.app.goo.gl/MCvWaTnRexEgkzZaA)

Regards,
Cory

Cory,

Please examine the USB connections under a microscope/loupe. Look for a cold solder joint on the USB connector (either of the 5 pins). I have seen an instance where such a weak solder joint can pass testing then later become flaky, this should really be very rare though. Or perhaps it's something else.

FWIW - at a minimum, all FTDI-Adapters are tested here to ensure they enumerate a serial port and can do an upload to a Moteino.

Thanks Felix!

I took a look at the pins and everything looked fine. Then I found a third micro-usb cable and that one worked! ... Incidentally, the first cable I tried was one of the short 8" cables I purchased from your shop.

Anyway, I'm glad the FTDI adapter works.

Thanks again,
Cory
