I just ordered my first Moteino's. While I'm waiting, I'm researching how to control 120v receptacles. Making something with relay or triads is simple, but I chanced upon the rc-switch library (https://code.google.com/p/rc-switch/) to learn and control those cheap'o $20 switches you find everywhere. I'm curious to know if any of you have tried that with this library?
Any recommendations on good switches to purchase? I'd like to order quite a few for around the house, so need a brand that has many different codes.
Thanks!
I think those switches you refer to are OOK and not FSK. While the RFM69 supports OOK, there is no such support in my library. There is a fellow who created an OOK cloner based on a Moteino, check out this thread: https://lowpowerlab.com/forum/index.php/topic,588.0.html
Maybe he has more insight about OOK.
I would not really invest heavily in OOK since those are very simple commands to replicate and replay. IOW low security, or none at all actually.
There is the SwitchMote wireless light switch I created but that installs in the wall and replaces your old mechanical switch.
Thanks, Felix. I didn't realize the difference in modulation. Curious what you do for controlling standard power receptacles? Do you build your own similar to switchmote? It would be nice to use the $20 walmart switches. I suppose I could always purchase a bare RFM69 and interface with my pi.
I don't really have a need to control power receptacles. I've built some custom SwitchMotes for some people that needed to control larger loads and I suppose that can be done, but would need a nice enclosure.
Check out these wifi in-wall power outlets. The datasheet says they can do 15A.

Felix, buy one and copy it to a moteino setup! :)
Thanks, I could not find a way to buy online...
Amazon.com
search for UBI#MFI-MPW
Close to $100 a piece delivered. Show stopper :)
It's not like that you don't have choice in the US (http://www.ubnt.com/distributors/). Or for ~$64 with shipping. (http://www.ebay.com/itm/111408620218)
I think their price is quite right for the feature set they provide. They're even able to monitor the power on the individual outlets. The 6-socket version has ethernet too.
(Edit/disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with them in any way, but have used a few of their products with satisfaction. And I found it strange you'd get if for a lot more than here in Europe.)
Hi all,
Check out the Power Switch Tail http://www.powerswitchtail.com/Pages/PSTKKit.aspx (http://www.powerswitchtail.com/Pages/PSTKKit.aspx). Its less than $20 and will allow you to turn a relay on or off with a 3v signal. Meaning, the Moteino can control it. It might be too big to fit into a wall outlet but you can mount it externally on a project.
