I'm powering my PI Gateway with a UPS and want to remove the battery, but when I disconnect the battery it gives an error and shuts down. How can I use Mighty Hat without the battery backup?

You will need to change the firmware and remove any code that checks the battery.
You could simply change this line (https://github.com/LowPowerLab/RFM69/blob/master/Examples/MightyHat/MightyHat.ino#L435) to always be false:
batteryLowShutdown = false;
Or change the LOWBATTERYTHRESHOLD to 0 (https://github.com/LowPowerLab/RFM69/blob/master/Examples/MightyHat/MightyHat.ino#L64):

Thanks. I kind of suspected that might be the case. It's been so long since I've had to touch the sketch and I think I'll have to recreate my arduino setup.
By the way, is there anything new coming with the Gateway and Mighty Hat? When it says "Retired" in the store, does that just relate to R3?
I retired it because the booster chip was retired and I had to redesign the board entirely.
I was going to maybe redo it with a SAMD51 MCU.
But now with component shortages it's hard to tell what will even be available 1 year from now so no redesign is in progress.
There is the RFGateway board that is an easy plug and play to any USB Pi or other computer (so not tied just to a Pi). If you just use an external UPS then you're gold. The shutdown/reboot functionality of the MightyHat was a plus, but its so rarely used (literally maybe once a year) that it's almost a non-necessity. So for now I think the RFGateway is a good alternative.
