Title: No serial data to Raspberry PiGateway via MightyHat [solved]
Post by: Joshua on November 26, 2017, 01:33:28 PM
Hello,

Can someone recomend how to troubleshoot? My RasPi Gateway is not receiving the node information via mighyhat. I setup the gateway with 2016-05-27-raspbian-jessie-lite and the easy interactive setup script. The software will read the node via a Moteino-USB as the gateway. The MightHat is receiving the node information and I can scroll through the results via the LCD. However, the signal is not getting to the IoT Gateway. I've disabled the GPIO serial console and the software is set to /dev/ttyAMA0 @ 115200 baud.

Here are steps I've taken.

I sounds like the typical trouble with the GPIO serial port (/dev/ttyAMA0) on Pi3 and recent distributions.
The Pi3s need to disable the bluetooth from using that port, and also the serial console needs to be disabled from using it.
There is some info in the guide about i (https://lowpowerlab.com/guide/mightyhat/pi3-compatibility/)t.
Also there are several other threads in the gateway forum (https://lowpowerlab.com/forum/pi-gateway/) discussing this serial issue, ex this one (https://lowpowerlab.com/forum/pi-gateway/gateway-app-not-running/).
Please follow up if you solve it or not.

Thank you for the quick reply Felix. I'll disable the Bluetooth as well. I'll post a a follow up on Friday.

That resolved the problem. For some reason /boot/config.txt had enable_uart=0 that needed to be changed to enable_uart=1

I found a great blog post on the topic

On the same webpage (spellfoundry.com) as above can also be read about Raspberry Pi 3.

Apparently on Rpi3 the first high performancing UART ttyAMA0 has been wired to BLUETOOTH !!!
The current default gateway installation script will not work on a raspberry pi 3.
You must do two things:
1) Change your settings to "ttyS0" in  /home/pi/gateway/settings.json5
2) Change the line "enable_uart=0" to "enable_uart=1" in /boot/config.txt

From the article can be read a bit down in the text:

"To summarise the ports on a Raspberry Pi 3 and be crystal clear:
/dev/ttyAMA0 -> Bluetooth
/dev/ttyS0 -> GPIO serial port."

Now my RpiGateway works  8)
But the LCD is still not working.
I opened a separate topic on this, hope someone can help me with that.

Great work with all this Felix  :)
I really hope this project can come to live again. It seem the number of posts has gone down!?

I just haven't had the time to do more updates and fixes in the past few months.
I hope to get back at it soon.
