MightyBoost with Raspi B+ and HDD
« on: April 15, 2016, 05:18:24 PM »
Hello,

I would like to know if it's possible to use a MightyBoost with a 2,5" HDD connected to a Raspberry Pi model B+? The HDD is powered by the raspi's USB ports.

I don't need the MightyBoost to keep everything powered on for a long time, just long enough to have the raspi automatically switched off in case of a power outage.

Also, does a 1200mAh lipo battery would be enough for this usage?

Best Regards.

Felix

My guess is not, but depending on the total load it might be possible. However it's not the normal recommended way of using it. It's supposed to only power the Pi without an excessive additional load.
A 1200mAh battery is very small, I recommend at least 2Ah.

Thanks Felix :)
I don't know how much the HDD add to the total consumption. I'll try to find out, sadly, the raspi and HDD aren't in my hands for the moment.

Yes, I had read your documentation saying you recommend at least 2Ah, but I was hoping this recommandation was just to get a longer time on the battery. Like I said, I would just need the battery to last the time to shutdown the raspberry pi.

Do you think there could be a way to modify the MightyBoost to support a higher load than just the raspi alone?

Best Regards.

1200mAh is probably enough to a safe shutdown but depending on the load a small battery may not be able to supply the current demand of the booster.
Sorry I don't really have a guide to hacking the board for higher current  :(

Hello Felix, and thanks for your answer!

Well, I'll first try to get the total power consumption, then I'll order a MightyBoost, Moteino and a 2Ah battery and I'll see what happens :)
I just hope I won't see smoke or flames :-/

Best Regards.
