Well I may have found a smoking gun....

void txData(Payload d) {
  DEBUG("Tx message size ");
  DEBUG(sizeof(d));
  DEBUG(" message ");
  DEBUG(d.msg);
  if ( radio.sendWithRetry(GATEWAYID, (const void *)(&d), sizeof(d), 0, 40) ) {
    DEBUGln(" ACK recieved");
  } else {
    DEBUGln(" no soup for you");
  }
  delay(300);
}

The moteino locks up at the radio.sendWithRetry() call...on the second attempt to TX  (first one does generate a result on the RTL-SDR waterfall, but nothing on gateway)

Serial monitor:
Weather Node Boot
Tx message size 16 message 1 no soup for you
WAKEUP
Tx message size 16 message 1

I think its time to break out the SMT rework station and swap out the RFM69HW   :)

perky

canSend() has been problematical in some posts, it reads RSSI and some people find this unreliable. Try setting RF69_CSMA_LIMIT_MS to zero (that's the timeout after which it will send a frame regardless of the current RSSI level).
