Suggestions for creating PCBs
« on: August 14, 2020, 09:26:41 AM »
Hey,

I want to get some shields made up for my Moteinos and other projects and wanted to see if there were any suggestions on the best workflow.  I am not experienced at PCB design so will probably have to use trial and error.  Just wanted get any pointers on where to start.  What design software is noob friendly, best places to get small runs made (in the US and not sure with COVID how it will impact this), etc.

Thanks for any input.

There are so many resources online that can help with the getting-started-with-PCB-design, not sure this is the best place to discuss it at length.
Eagle and Kicad are popular with hobbyists so I dont think you can go wrong there, although there are other alternatives.
I would say Eagle is the most common and a lot of online open sourced projects are in Eagle format.
OSHPark is great for small boards in small quantities, like shields for Moteinos.

I found the sparkfun guides to eagle useful (https://learn.sparkfun.com/)

Then I used OSH park and then jlcpcb, who are much cheaper (for me in the UK) bit lower quality and slower.

Best advice, start with something simple and iterate.

No previous experience using PCB design software.
Found online EasyEDA and with a bit of googling and view some tutorials produced nice Moteino shield PCBs and large PCB.
Ordered PCBs from  JLCPCB (not in US)  and quality was good.
Twenty Moteino shields for $26 delivered DHL 7 days from day I placed the order.
From China to Alaska! - Lucky to get stuff  from Amazon to Alaska in 2 weeks.
Note this was last year, preCOVID.
