Square pins?

Hi,

I purchased from China some pluggable male/female screw terminals.  5/5.08mm pitch.

The pitch is fine.  However the square male pins do not fit in the holes on my (eagle designed) board.  Too large.

Obviously I have the wrong holes.  What holes should I choose in eagle?

I would make it larger than the diagonal diameter of your pins, by 20% or so.
In my SwitchMote kits I use 50mil drills for the 5mm pitch screw terminals, but they are round.

Thanks.

I have found that with persuasion they fit...  Not sure I can remove them.

I will switch to just making holes with your 50mil size, as that should be easier.  Plus I can save some space as the silkscreen shapes I have are too large.

@Felix,

Do you use a standard part and add another bigger hole ontop, or edit the part?

How do I do the latter (in eagle)?

Ah.  Found this;

https://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/237815/eagle-pcb-change-drill-size-of-all-vias-of-a-specific-size

In eagle select part; Chose the spanner icon (Change); Choose Drills; Choose ... at the bottom, and enter 50 in the size.

I stumbled across SparkFun's locking pin header post a while ago when I was teaching myself PCB design and liked the idea just not the implementation.  They offset every other hole upward so that a row of male pins is captured by the interference fit with the PCB making it *much* easier to solder.  I opted instead to stagger the outer holes in and the stagger the spacing inside the row so some gaps are big or small side-to-side.  My lock header is smaller by a few mils than a normal one plus easier to hand assemble; take that SparkFun!

Pretty easy to see what I'm talking about here: https://pcbs.io/share/zvq1Z
