Title: Power Shield only 3V ?
Post by: Xilobyte on June 14, 2018, 09:44:50 AM
I am using the Power Shield R3 with a LiPo 3.7v battery and can not choke 5v out of it for the life of me.  I see no reason why. The VOUT is suposed to be the boosted 5V but it is only 3. Got ideas?

It had 5v when it left the lab.
Let's run some checks, please confirm:

- you have an original PowerShield
- nothing else wired to it before you reporting this problem
- nothing else (except battery) wired to it now, no load

Hope it is genuine. I ordered it from LowPower :).  I am not implying anything that it did not function before. I am trying to figure out why I keep ruining these power shields. The first set were ruined because the battery connector must be flipped so the poles match.  My bad.  Now on this new one all I did was solder some pins to the template area and a piezo speaker. Alone that speaker should not be a load. I do confirm that my last New shield does output 5V out of the package.

Ok so as long as there was no load on it, it should read 5v.
I am not sure about an overload. The booster is only meant to power a Moteino and any sensors, but not a load greater than about 2-300mA at most, depending on the input battery voltage condition.
If you're concerned a PowerShield is defective you can return it for service although like I said, they all get tested here in the lab to ensure they deliver the 5V from a LiPo, and that charging works.
