Title: how to connect garagemote to opener?
Post by: quesker on January 13, 2015, 01:34:42 PM
Hi, I've been reading over the garagemote instructions and I want to order the stuff for it.  I just am not sure how to connect those orange wires.  Do I just splice them into the wires from the button on the wall that operates the door?

Do you need to be an expert at soldering or will it work if I just go for it?  You should sell a pre-soldered kit.  :)

I was thinking of maybe just skipping the pi and internet part of it and just making a longer range remote control with the moteinos since mine has such short range.  That would work too right?

Thanks.

Basically you can see there is a 1x8 header on the GarageMote PCB:

The top 2 are the closure contacts that will wire in parallel to your wall opener wires. You will need to figure out which those 2 terminals are on your opener. Basically those 2 wires will go up to your ceiling and/or onto your wall and into your wall mounted garage opener. So basically the little relay on GarageMote will just make a closure on those 2 wires just long enough to trigger a door open/close just as if you pressed the wall door opener manually.
The rest of 6 wires connect to 2 hall sensors as explained in the guide (http://lowpowerlab.com/garagemote), each sensor has 3 leads.
Does that help explain it?

I can't sell presoldered kits, or they would cost $50, plus you have to get a Moteino and solder that too.

Ok I think I get it, thank you.

I took a picture of my garagemote installed on the opener for you. http://i.imgur.com/2ad4fsv.jpg

On the left side you'll see a 2 conductors (white & black) which are inside the brown jacketed 'cable'. These wires to the garage door button installed on the wall near my house door (your typical way to operate the door).

You can see where these two conductors are connected to the actual door motor. You'll also see the conductors coming from the garagemote (the ones labeled "opener"); they're inserted into the same terminals on the motor as my wall switch.

I hope that answers your question. Let me know if you need more help.

Thanks

Cool, thanks.  I ordered the two moteinos and the garagemote, should be here tomorrow.  I watched some youtube videos on soldering so hopefully I don't mess it up.

Well I can't solder.  This $9 walmart iron probably isn't helping either.

I was really looking forward to this but I give up.

Soldering is pretty much a given guarantee in electronics :P
