Title: Raspberry Pi 3 and ATXRaspi
Post by: chunkysteveo on April 13, 2016, 07:04:53 AM
Hey Felix,

Was just curious if you had any thoughts about updating the ATXRaspi board to keep up with the latest Raspberry Pi (3) release? Specifically an increase of the power MOSFET which I believe is rated at a max of 2.5A? From what I have read, the RPi Foundation are recommending a power supply of 2.5A for "full load" (1A for the SoC/RAM, 0.3A for WiFi/BT, and 1.2A for full powered to USB) which if used leaves no room for the additional 'power rail' supplied on the ATXRaspi.

It is very much an edge case and will probably never affect anyone - but curious if you had any thought on it and if there was any future versions of the ATXRaspi in the pipeline?

Keep up the good work! All the best,

Steve

Hi Steve,
I have not heard any issues so far, and my own tests reveal no changes with the Pi 3, but I have not covered all possible scenarios.
If you find a use case where the Pi by itself (with keyboard, mouse, HDMI etc, but no other loads) will cause it to fail please let me know.

Hey Felix,

Agree totally, 99.9% of users probably won't ever "max it out" - but was just curious if you were looking to upgrade the power capabilities (Amps) to keep up with the more power hungry Pi 3.

I was going to use the extra power rail available on the ATXRaspi for my OSMC and Hyperion "Ambilight" set up till I realised that the mosfet was only rated up to 2.5A. My LED string can go way above that if all RGB's are on full. Am going to use a little transistor or mosfet switch to turn the LED power on/off with with ATXRaspi using the extra power rail 5V signal. At the moment the LED power is hard wired to the power supply - bypassing the ATXRaspi, but I want to finish with a more complete on/off solution.

Need to order a couple more too... I fried one testing the voltage - looked away and my probes slipped...puff of smoke, d'oh!!  ;D

Keep up the good work!

Steve

Thanks Steve,
I will keep this in mind and I was aware that at some point I may need to look into another power switch.
In the meantime you can always use the switched output to drive another larger mosfet's gate if you need to.
