can ATXRaspi + Pimodules UPiS be combined?
« on: February 07, 2014, 04:42:27 PM »
Dear all,

I was wondering if it is possible to combine the ATXRaspi with the Pimodules UPiS (http://www.pimodules.com http://www.pimodules.com/_pdf/UPiS%20Module.pdf).

I want to use this combination to use my Pi in the car. I don't want the Pi to be always on when the ignition is on (therefore the ATXRaspi) on the other hand when the igniton is switched of the Pi should stay on and after a while (in case I do not start the engine again) it shut shutdown safely (therefore the UPiS).

For clarification imagine the following situation:
I put my kids in the car for a long drive (couple of hours). After some (hundred) kilometers they are starting te be bored and I would like to entertain them with a movie provided by the Raspi with XBMC installed. So first I want to switch the Pi on => ATXRaspi. During a short break at  a patrol station I would like the Raspi to stay on even if I switch the car of => UPiS. But still I would like to be able to shutdown the Pi in case I leave the car or on the way if I think that the kids should read a book instead of watching movies all the time... => ATXRaspi. Last but not least, if in a hurry I forget to shutdown the Pi before leaving the car it should still shutdown safely after a while => UPiS.

Does anyone has experience in combining these two modules (ATXRaspi and UPiS) or can say if this could be a workable solution?

Many thanks in advance and with best regards.

Felix

Hi deschman and thanks for joining the forum.
I briefly looked at the datasheet for this product and it looks like it has a bunch of options. It's not entirely clear (maybe I would need to spend more time reading it) how the signaling between UPiS and Pi works. ATXRaspi is just a means to shutdown the Pi manually or from another signal that can pull low. So if the UPiS can pull low that ATXRaspi "button" input then it can decide when to trigger a shutdown for the Pi. From all I can see at a glance I think the answer is yes, you can probably combine them for an integrated solution. But don't quote me on that since I did not test the theory myself. If you decide to test them together please share your findings.

Felix, thanks for your answer. I will give it a try (when I can get some time...).

Regards.
