ATXRaspi for NES Mini Classic On/Off - Reset Board???

Hey everyone!

first time one here and somewhat of a newbie over the past few months.
Taken on a few projects here or there and I've taken it upon myself to put a pi 3 in my nes mini classic since i had 2 of them and didn't want to resell the 2nd thinking, what if, what if i could make it work.

Well i did, it got in the nes mini shell, but i am so in need to make a shut off switch work with it.
but the board for the on off switch is very small, and not like traditional nes on off boards that has wires.

I have included photos for you to see below of the board, and i was hoping if someone could maybe take a peek, make suggestions. i am not very good with a multimeter so if someone suggests i need to use it, could you please be 2nd grader specific to what i need to do with it (red tip here, black tip there) lol

thanks all for your help! its much appreciated!!!

My guess is the POWER is latching, and the RESET is momentary. Can you verify that?
What's the white rectangle component in the upper left? Connector?
How is this board connected to the rest of the unit?

briandamico

this board was originally connect to the original board of the nes mini classic. it had a small tape like connector that went from the photo here to the actual board of the nes mini classic.

since i am using a raspberry pi 3 now, the whole point is to connect this board to the pi via a shutdown circuit switch

the upper left hand thing you speak of is where the tape connector was connected to the board.

there were no actual wires used

here is a photo of what it was stock wise

Are you using this board simply because it has the form factor that fits the case?
If so you will need to identify the connection points. There are only 4 of them, two for POWER and two for RESET.
With a continuity function on a multimeter check the connections on each button to identify that. Then you would wire them to ATXRaspi as shown in the wiring diagram:

briandamico

ok I'm happy to do that, only thing is i am not good with a multi meter

this is the multi meter i have

so with this in mind, what am i using on here, and when checking for that and i putting the red tip on the top left solder point and the black tip on the top right solder point?

Felix

When the thing between the 2 probes is a short/wire, the meter beeps (in continuity check mode).
You are trying to find which 2 leads on each switch, will do just that (when pressed for momentary reset button, or latched for latching power switch).
Google or youtube for more details  ;)

briandamico

yea I'm sorry it does not really make much sense aside form having the multimeter on the check mode which i understand.
everything else is over my head.

i guess i will hold off till someone can be a little more clear or offer instructions.

thank anyway felix

Hey Felix

ok so i had a few days to rest my brain and got back to it today.
i got out the multi meter and out it on the mode for continuity, and i discovered the following, which i can hope maybe you can shed some light ok.
I took a photo for you to show, there are two scenarios, each involve a key point touched with the tip on the front, and then the 2nd tip i checked on the back side solder points and this is what beeps i got.

let me know your thoughts ok

thanks again

update

i decide to go a bit further and i discovered this. the top back two solar points when touching this far left circuit shows 1000+ on the multi meter and the led (kinda) flickered

When I was fitting my Famicom mini with a pi zero, I wanted to use the original board almost identical to that one. In the end I ended up replacing it with proto board. This made things really easy.

briandamico

here is the photo

also dmich135,
what is proto board and do u have a photo you can at least show me to see what that looks like connecting an on/off to a shutdown circuit?

dmich135

Here is the board I used, they can be cut to size with scissors. https://www.adafruit.com/product/2670

I used a new slide switch and momentary button. you would need a latching tactile button I'm guessing something like,  https://www.amazon.com/uxcell-12x12x9mm-Latching-Tactile-Button/dp/B00HGAKKAC/ref=pd_bxgy_60_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00HGAKKAC&pd_rd_r=XHHAR4HVJGFX5WTMKQNY&pd_rd_w=mOd5x&pd_rd_wg=v7X3L&psc=1&refRID=XHHAR4HVJGFX5WTMKQNY

as for the wiring, mine was a hard power switch. you could follow the ATXRasPi diagrams to hook up the latching switch. The reset switch I used RetroGame to use it to exit emulator rather than a hard reset, though again you could follow the diagrams to use it as a hard reset.

briandamico

well i gave up and decided to just go for it
i have managed to get it to work minus the LED light

does anyone have any bright ideas why the power switch is in reverse?
meaning
when pushed in its off and when its pushed out its on?

dmich135

If you have one of the wires in the middle, I'd switch the other wire to the other side, as in top to bottom or the other way around.
