Ok so I got my supplies. Am I correct in saying that I can program the moteinos without the raspberry pi? (It'll be almost a month before it arrives). Will they power through the usb when connected to my pc? Thanks for the help

Looks like I missed ordering a fdti adapter for the moteino that's with my sonarmote. Won't I need it to program that moteino? I ordered the moteino usb for the receiving end so I know that's not necessary there.

Yes you'd need some serial adapter to program a USB/FTDI-less Moteino.
FTDI-Adapter is the easy plug and play method. There's other ways and other compatible serial adapters too.

Ok I ordered the fdti adapter. I was looking at the sonarmote page and it says "The Moteino is programmable via the USB as well (enumerates as FTDI serial port)." it's in the First paragraph. I'm confused now

Ok sorry for any confusion.
The Moteinos have a 1x6 FTDI header that plugs directly into a FTDIAdapter. So you can program it that way.
However for kits like SonarMote and MotionMote there is an integrated FTDI chip onboard those PCBs and once you plug in the Moteino on them, the Moteinos can be programmed through the USB ports of those boards. So don't solder the 1x6 header otherwise they won't fit in the case any more. So ... you don't need the FTDIAdapter when the Moteinos are attached to the SonarMote/MotionMote.
However I would add that it's still useful to have a FTDIAdapter around.

Ok. Thanks. Just waiting on my RaspberryPi to arrive and a friend who does programming to help me compile my sketch. 😁
