I had an extra SwitchMote PSU laying around and since it is the Christmas season I decided to put it to use controlling the lights on our Christmas tree. The video Felix put together in this post here was my inspiration:
https://lowpowerlab.com/forum/projects/how-about-developing-a-plugmote/msg16091/#msg16091
.
I didn't want the buttons as that would add to the size and I use my PiGateway to control the outlet. The particular SwitchMote I used has a single relay, so both outlets are controlled by the one relay. I uploaded the Switchmote sketch and all you need to do to control the outlet is to use BTN1 to turn things on and off.
Everything is off the shelf and easy to do.

Next step, amplitude modulation of your lights controlled by all your favorite songs.
