The gain in the antenna for TX and RX is the same but the power for transmission on the gateway can be greater than the node's transmission power, so you could get more range from the gateway to the node than from the node to gateway. Ultimately the two way range will be limited by the power the node can transmit at.

If this is from a $$ savings point of view, no.
And for consistency I would keep everything the same.
The only case where this would make a lot of sense (to always use W) is for the W's ability to transmit at lower power (because of the hardwired combination of PAs in the W vs the HW).
