poor range

Im getting very poor range with two moteinos. 1 running the gateway example  and 1 running the motionmote example.  Any suggestions what to check?
Also in general is there a post somewhere that explains in layman terms practical tips to improve  the range?

Make sure you have an antenna soldered or attached.
Make sure you loaded the correct settings (frequency and HW setting).
Many other threads in the forum that cover this type of issue.
