You comment about the hopping stuff taking over eight seconds doesn't sound right at all.  I remember a comment you made about this at one point, but I thought the blame was placed on the Ethernet upload instead.

I suspected the Ethernet as the problem, so as a test I removed the Ethernet code and just printed to the serial monitor as packets came in, and I still had a long delay (typically about 70 seconds) every few of minutes.  I've been meaning to do some more testing and post the results, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Since I still have this problem with only the radio on the SPI bus, it shouldn't be an SPI issue.  But I was thinking that implementing Paul's improvements couldn't hurt.
