Title: Moteino USB and phone charger issue
Post by: shagga on September 26, 2015, 05:55:11 PM
Hi there,

First, thank you for the Moteino, I like it !! I am currently deploying a platform named Jeedom. I integrated a Mysensors module, reviewed the sketch and library to have it working with the 2 Moteino (RFM69HW) I have and it works ! I was planning to by 5 more.

That's what I did today. Then I decided to take the Moteino USB away from my laptop to move it to another location to test the range through the house. I unplugged it from my laptop (where it works fine) and plugged it in a phone charger (Iphone) with the same cable . No led, nothing. I tried 4 others chargers that are for sure working, still without success. It works only when connected to a PC. That doesn't sound right...

What am I missing here ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

S.

Apple uses some wizardry on the power output of their recent chargers to keep their phones from unnecessarily building up heat while charging. Have you tried non-Apple chargers or a suitable battery?

Thanks !

Yes, I tried 4 different USB chargers (multiport chargers). They work for virtually any device (my iphone, camera, Galaxy S6, ...).

This is one of the chargers I tried: http://www.amazon.com/Anker-PowerPort-Charging-Multi-Port-Charger/dp/B00P933OJC/ref=sr_1_23?ie=UTF8&qid=1443336270&sr=8-23&keywords=Anker+charger

Have you tried a battery as well? Use a 9V or anything in a holder like 3x1.5V AA or similar.

Can you try the simple Blinky sketch on the MoteinoUSB and plug that in?
The reason I ask is that when you plug it into a PC usb port, the DTR pin on the FTDI is asserted causing the bootloader to flash the onboard LED several times, which will NOT happen when you simply plug it into a power source that only provides VIN and GND (5V). So make sure your sketch blinks the LED independently of the bootloader.

Sure, I will try this evening (France time)! I forgot to mention that a temp sensor is connected to GND-3.3-Pin3, I don't know if it has any impact on the behavior the board can have.

That's fine, all is needed is a blinky to prove the board is getting power.
"3.3" is the 3.3v output from the Moteino voltage regulator.
