Title: Listen to existing garage radio remote
Post by: grk on January 10, 2014, 10:10:28 AM
Hi all, trying to solve a little problem I found this amazing Moteino.
For my easy problem I just want to listen for my existing garage radio remote (no rolling code) to light up garden lights if it's dark, so I can park easily.
I know I can achieve this goal in many sort of ways but this seems the nicest to me.

Any hint will be much appreciated, thanks!

Does the garage door remote transmit on a frequency that can be received by one of the 3 bands supported by Moteino?
Does the remote use a modulation the Moteino can detect (FSK, ASK, OOK)?
If you like to hack and experiment this could be a fun project.

If it were me, I'd buy 2 Moteinos and build one into a GarageMote (http://lowpowerlab.com/garagemote/) and use the 2nd Moteino to receive the "garage opening" status to turn on the lights.

DO you have any way you can control the gargen lights with a microcontroller?
OR are you looking for a solution for that as well?
If you would control the garage with a GarageMote kit then you would know when the garage moves (open, opening, closed, closing) and could send a signal to the garage light controller which cound then switch a relay.
I plan to do that myself in the future using a SwichMote but that solution is not quite yet ready for the store. Hopefully soon!

Thank you all for your replies.
About band coverage it should be fine (443MHz) but I cannot find anything sure about modulation (probabily ASK).
About controlling the lights I already built a small circuit with a single relay that can be triggered by moteino.
At the moment I cannot turn the control in a GarageMote because I share it with my parents and messing up things is not an option :)

Any other hint before I buy some hardware for testing?

Thank you!

I think I see your concern. You don't want the GarageMote to open or close the door because it might be a problem for your parents. That's fine, only use the GarageMote to detect if the garage door is opening to turn the patio lights on. You don't have to allow the GarageMote to open/close the door, either remove that code or don't even connect those wires.
