Title: FTDI connector and uploading sketches
Post by: gussmith on May 31, 2013, 01:46:32 PM
Hi, received my 2 Moteino's today.

I have the send/receive examples from the library working and can see the communication in the serial monitor on both sides!

I am using a Sparkfun FTDI Basic connector. What I need to do every time after uploading a sketch is to disconnect/connect the cable and power to vin.

I tried the blink example on D13,D12,D11 and did not see them blinking until I performed the disconnect/connect action.
I need to do this on both Moteino's.

Does anyone else have this?
Does this have to do with the FTDI connector I use?

Cheers,
Gus

What I suspect is the FTDI won't reset your board.
Which FTDI version of their adapter do you have?
What Version of the Arduino IDE are you using and on what OS?

The page at https://www.sparkfun.com/products/9716 mentions that this is an upgrade which brings out the DTR allowing the board to be automatically reset after sketch upload. Could it be possible you have an older model that doesn't do that?

Ultimately - do you have a way to check whether the FTDI board attempts to reset the Moteino? (Ie with a logic analyzer or an oscilloscope)

By the way the LEDs are on D9 on Moteino R2s.

I googled and found many references relating to this problem.
Many suggestions to put 0.1uf cap from reset to dtr. Does not work.

I think I have one of the older ones, on the board it only says "4-12-11" as number.

I will buy two of the recommended ones.

Cheers,
Gus

The FTDI Adapter in the LowPowerLab shop will work BTW...
