Title: Beginner's question - used pins
Post by: cosax on June 13, 2014, 07:19:14 AM
Hello everyone,

please bear with me ...
Pins with a star (*) in the moteino diagram indicate used pins: D2, D8-D13

Does that mean that we should not connect anything on these pins because it will interfere with the operation of the moteino?

thanks

Hi cosax,
If you go to https://lowpowerlab.com/guide/moteino/out-of-box/ you will see the diagrams and the legend explanations for each pin.
If you have a bare Moteino (no radio, no flash) then all pins are available (only LED is using D9).
If you have radio then pin D10 is off limits (it's the CS for the radio).
If you have a flash chip then pin D8 is offlimits (CS for flash chip).
Pins D11-D13 are generic SPI pins, used by the radio and/or flash, but you can use them for other SPI devices, just choose a different CS pin (not D8 or D10).

Very clear now. Thanks for the prompt response.

I'm using a bare Moteino (i.e. No Radio, No Flash).
I notice D12, D13 do not work when configured for normal output pins. (i.e pinMode (D13, OUTPUT)  &  DigitalWrite.)
Does this mean  Pins D11-D13 are hard configured as  SPI pins, so  can only be used for  other SPI devices and cannot used for Digital Read or Digital Write functions? Is there a way to configure them as regular Digital pins?
Thanks

If you call SPI.begin() that will configure them as SPI. Otherwise they are GPIO like all other pins.
