Yup.  I'm sure TI's motivation was  just  to illustrate how their parts could be used, and I just meant it as an example for the OP of how a voltage converter might be turned on for only brief periods of time so as to minimize losses.

Absolutely right Tom, I usually try to derive the equations given in boost regulators from first principles and verify they're the same. I actually found an error in one of them where they got the sign wrong. Worth doing, and you then can tweek it for your application.
