When would I need at 3 button as opposed to the 1 button? I just want to control one switch (to turn my outside lights on at home). its 4-6 LED spot lights. I'm assuming I need a 1 button and the 3 button setups are for syncing with other switchmotes.

1 button is all you need to switch a light, and perhaps SYNC another or multiple lights to switch along with it.
3 buttons allows to switch other switchmotes via the SYNC feature. For instance I have a SwitchMote that has 3 buttons, the middle switches the light attached to it, and also another SwitchMote at the end of a hallway. The other 2 buttons I use to switch the garage lights, independently of the middle button.
If you look at the sketch for SwitchMote you can even change the order or do other things, but the way it's coded it works by default with the gateway interface.
Once installed, push a button and the new SMote should show in the interface, pick the node type as SwitchMote and the UI will show the available buttons to "virtually" push them.

I forgot to mention that SwitchMote2x10A has two 10A relays, which are switched by 2 buttons. So you could control 2 loads from the same SM. Or if you just use 1 button then the other relay can be switched from the UI.
