Title: 18650 battery li-ion battery
Post by: stern0m1 on February 07, 2018, 01:52:50 PM
Are there any reputable companies that make   li-ion 18650 batteries?

I believe that Samsung makes most of the good cells that people are using for DIY Tesla powerwalls:

I've been using Panasonic with built-in protection circuit and they have worked well for me.  However, I do not have any side by side performance comparison data.  The ones I'm using are rated at 3400mAH. Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NUI47OY

I use these for backup power on my gateways.

What specs are you looking for? For high capacity and low current draw I like going with the Sanyo GA cells, they're basically a continuation of the Panasonic cell listed above but with 3500 mAH and a 10A rated discharge.

As far as reputable companies, Panasonic, Sanyo, LG, Samsung, and Sony are all big manufacturers that release datasheets that you can trust for their cells.

The website I order from is www.IMRbatteries.com (http://www.imrbatteries.com). They have the best prices on unprotected cells that I've found, however they have next to no protected cells.

The main thing I want is short circuit protection.
Any ideas of "generic" that you know is good?
I am looking for large quantities.
Thanks

How large?  If large enough it may make sense to put the protection circuit on your PCB rather than in the battery.

Its for a friend, that has a product he sells on amazon. Just some dumb flashlight imported from china, but there where reports of the device smoking etc... I believe its because is is very easy for the user to put the batteries in, in a way that would short circuit them.
Thanks

There are many on AliExpress (whether you trust them or not is up to you, maybe do some testing ;) ), e.g.

What's an FCC certified battery? Oh, it has a FCC mark on it! :) Also it's supposed to be protected yet there's a warning about not short circuiting them. Maybe that AliExpress idea wasn't one of my best... !

Almost anything chinese is like fake news  ;)

I would not trust chinese batteries or anything involving potentially explosive chemistry+electricity, not to give them to someone else at least.
